The boyfriend and I visited Longhorns Barbecue Smokehouse before Christmas after trying to go to The Fat Hippo Underground (on a Monday) but it was closed. Longhorns was only a short walk away - you can find it at 10 Mosley Street, NE1 1DE - and I'm so glad we visited.
I'm a bit hazy with what I ordered but, basically, I ordered a smoky hot dog with fries and Matthew, the boyfriend, got chicken wings. We actually ordered two lots of fries and only one mound arrived so I'm presuming they just piled them together. I love the flavours. The fries were seasoned beautifully and tasted unique, like I don't think I've had fries that tasted like Longhorns did anywhere else in Newcastle. The hot dog was BIG. So big I had to cut it down to three more manageable chunks. I am not complaining though, I walked away from Longhorns full after tasting so many flavours haven eaten some top quality food.
No reservations are needed for Longhorns, you just go in and sit down. You'll have to get up again to order which isn't a problem as long as you have someone to hold your table (while Matthew went up to order I noticed a table go from occupied to unoccupied to occupied again in a short amount of time). Some downsides to the tables - there are a lot of big communal ones and just generally not enough when we visited, this place is popular. Another note about the tables - or more specifically what was on the tables - there was wooden cutlery which I don't know how I feel about. In theory it's good because if you drop it, no big deal there is a lot of wooden cutlery to replace it but I didn't really like eating with it. Good thing I got finger food. However, the staff were efficient and the food came in good time, nice and hot, not to mention unlimited BBQ sauce on the table which was divine.
Like I said earlier, we ate here before Christmas so I've been delayed in writing this up and posting it but I have definitely remembered the most important bits. Would I eat here again? Most definitely. It isn't currently high up on places to eat in Newcastle (just because I really want to go to other places) but I think I can see myself visiting later in 2015.
