I have Career Disillusions

You know, working in retail at Christmas can be a lot of fun one minute and then like entering the sixth circle of hell the next. I'm a bit bummed today because my Christmas break consists of just the two days off and I would love nothing more than the veg out for the next week to recover. Although I'm in a retail job I love, at the end of the day it is retail and this isn't what I had planned. But, I don't have any plans at all really yet I do have my idea of the perfect job, and here are some of the elements it needs to have:

Why I'm Proud of My 2015 Self

I know 2015 isn't even over yet and I'm putting this post out there. I don't care. 2015 is a crazy long year, and I'm at the point where I just want it to be over now and it's very unlikely that something ground breaking is going to happen to me in these last 2 or 3 weeks. Instead of doing a Ruminations yearly wrap up like I did for 2014 but deleted later, I'm going to tell you what I can't believe I accomplished this year (in no particular order).

We All Looked Up by Tommy Wallach

I love a good book that makes you think. I read my fair share of books but not a lot of them affected me the way We All Looked Up did, but that's what I expect from stories about the end of the world.  This one infiltrated my dreams, man. Here, let me tell you about it.

Etsy Store Update

Today's post is a bit laid back and more of a casual update. So, a while ago I posted about how I opened an Etsy store and I thought, it's been a solid 6 months, I should tell you how that little adventure went.

Christmas Gift Guide for Harry Potter Fans

Thought I'd turn my hand to a Christmas Guide today, and there's no better place to start than Harry Potter. A Christmas post in November? Deny it all you want but we're just over a month away to C-day and I like to be prepared. There's the bonus that if you are currently Christmas shopping you can get yourself adorable things from across the water and it will still make it in time to be wrapped and under the tree before Santa visits. I'm combining my love for online shopping with everyone's favourite wizard and browsing for a little something something for myself too.

NaNoWriMo Winner 2015

Hot damn, I actually did it. Last night I completed my first ever NaNoWriMo after attempting it so many times in the past. I don't know why this time was different and I really can't believe I did 50k - surely the computer has added it up wrong?

Unspeakable by Abbie Rushton

Don't judge a book by it's cover. Except it is someones job to design covers (and damn, did they do a lush job this time around) I'm ashamed to say that this is a book that appealed to me because the cover was beautiful. I know, I know.

The Accident Season by Moira Fowley-Doyle

I went in to this book not quite knowing what to expect. It's a contemporary but the blurb and even the prologue gave me these otherworldly feels, for a bit I even thought it was hinting at a dystopian novel but what it actually is, I can't put in to words.

Daughters unto Devils by Amy Lukavics

I am not a horror fan. I looked at this book and was like, nope, I bet I don't like this. It's terrible of me, but I put off reading this book for as much as I could, pushing it further and further down my to-read list when suddenly, I just mentally slapped myself around the head and thought what would Shia Lebeouf say?

Oreo Truffles with a Geeky Halloween Twist

 photo blogfrontpage-1.png
Last Halloween I had a post over on Geekocracy showing my mad baking skills. Did I say mad? I meant bad. This post is very similar to the truffle post I released on Christmas to make easy peasy Oreo truffles with next to no effort and they will look awesome. This post was first featured on Geekocracy on the 19th of October 2014.

Readathon Warm Up: Planning Ahead

This October will only be the second time I take part in Dewey's Read-a-Thon and for any other newbies out there that haven't participated before it can sound amazing but scary at the same time. 24 hours to read books? Awesome, I'll read ALL the books - but when will I sleep? You find yourself asking all the real questions about how to manage your time and what your number of books will be by the end. Here are some little tips I learned last time around when thinking about the REAL questions.

8 Geeky Pet Costumes for Halloween

Nerdette At Large
For Halloween last year I did a fun little guest post over at Vulcan Sugar and Spice Nerdette at Large about Halloween costumes on pets so, as I've been doing previously, I'm sharing it today on my own blog to mark the one year anniversary (well almost, this was posted on October 10th 2014)! Thanks to the wonderful Gabriella for posting it.

New Book Rating System

This kind of feels like a pointless post that I'm very excited to write. It's hella nerdy, but I want an official post as a starting point (and it makes it feel 110% official) because I've decided to organise the way I rate books. This isn't going to be my most viewed post, but I feel like I need it as a reference.

TV Series: It's not too late to catch up!

 photo blogfrontpage-1.png
This is another post I wrote this time last year for Geekocracy! I know I probably shouldn't post it because time is a major thing about this piece, and most of these TV shows have come and gone but whatever. I still want to show off my accomplishments and if you haven't gotten around to watching any of these shows then a little note from me: get on that. First featured on Geekocracy at the beginning of October last year.

Recent Reads Reviews | #6

Today feels like a good a day as any to share some book reviews! I feel like I'm falling behind in the writing about the books, but I still plan to review every book I read - eventually. Today's theme is supernatural. So if you like zombies or witches, well I have a few book recommendations.

Why We Aren't Engaged (Yet)

I don't know about your news feed, but mine always explodes in summer with marriage photographs, engagement announcements and a lot of baby news. There is this pressure that maybe I should be doing these things as well (??!?) so I wanted to remind myself of reasons why I, as in me - Fiona - personally, am not even engaged yet. Of all the pressure I feel as a young lady to be married with kids or whatever, the most pressure I feel is from young 10 year old Fiona who wanted 8 kids and to be married by yesterday.

#NEBookSwap 2015

If you caught my tweets, last week I practically bombarded your feed with my excitement for #NEBookSwap, an event Rhian and I have been planning for I don't even know how long now. It started with a simple tweet, a love of books, and a meetings over giant cocktails, coffee and biscuits to plan and organise what turned out to be a pretty awesome night (if I do say so myself).

5 Things to Bring to an Outdoor Cinema

At the beginning of the month I went to my first ever outdoor cinema! Luna Cinema showed Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone in Alnwick Castle grounds, the set in which parts of the movie was actually filmed! It was so exciting when the flying lesson came on, I think everyone there nudged the person next to them and squealed a little bit. I definitely did. Even with the rain, wind and cold, a huge crowd of potterheads camped out to watch the first film, myself included.

Lush: Space Girl Bath Bomb

When I heard about the list of products being discontinued from Lush I was a little heartbroken to see the Space Girl Bath Bomb on there. Space Girl was my very first bath bomb, all those years ago, and I loved it then - it made me realise baths are still a lot of fun, even when you're an adult. So, obviously, once I heard the news I ran to Lush in the Metro Centre to stock up on a few.

Recent Reads Reviews | #5

Some of today's book reviews are from books I read so long ago, I'm nervous that I might get some parts of it inaccurate. So, I'll try and reflect more on how I felt during and after the read than focus in on characters and plot etc.

Three Places to Visit in Newcastle*

I absolutely love my city; there's so much to do, eat and experience. To all my non-Newcastle readers, if I were to recommend one city to visit it would be Newcastle, not only so we could hang out, but so you could visit the best of what Newcastle has to offer (which is pretty damn good):

Five Nerdy Holiday Destinations You'll Want to Visit

 photo blogfrontpage-1.png

Where does the time go? This time last year I wrote my very first post for Geekocracy. I have this uncontrollable urge to have all of my writings and posts in one place, my blog (so it kind of becomes a portfolio and I have a copy just in case) but so I don't step on the toes of those I wrote for I think a year is a fair amount of time for a bit of a breather. Without further hesitation I'll share with you a piece I wrote that was first featured on the 1st September 2014 over on Geekocracy

Mog on the Tyne, Newcastle

Of course I was thrilled when I heard Newcastle was getting a cat cafe! I was even more thrilled when the name changed from Pretty Pussy Parlour to Mog on the Tyne, it's much more clever. Opening in August, I booked up to visit as soon as I was able to. It was one of the things I was really looking forward to doing once I got back from New Zealand, so earlier this week that is where I went.

Lush Oxford Street Exclusives: The Experimenter Bath Bomb

I don't have baths very often (shower girl over here) but when I do I will always use a Lush bath bomb, I have so many in supply to match my bath demand, and recently I've taken to making notes and blogging about them, so I hope you don't mind that today's post I will be sharing a bath bomb that is going from a Lush Oxford Street Exclusive to nationwide!

New Zealand Reading List

With less than 10 days until I jet off to New Zealand (it's finally down to single digits and I'm really getting excited) I thought I'd share with you my reading list. I have had to limit myself to a few books to get me through a 2 day flight. This was one tough decision because not only did I have to decide, from the mountain of books on my shelf as well as new ones that you wouldn't need to ask me twice to buy, how many to take but it was a question of what to take too. Here's what I've decided (but I don't know if a) these are good choices or, b) whether it is too much/too little)

Lush Oxford Street Exclusives: Intergalactic Bath Bomb

When I was in London at the beginning of June I made a little visit to the Lush Oxford Street because I wanted to get my hands on some of their exclusives. After a browse I decided that one of the ones I needed to try was Intergalactic because it looked too interesting to let pass. Now, I essentially just did a smell test for all of the products I chose (and I actually only chose two now that I think about it) so I had no idea what to expect. With book in hand, I ran my bath and let the magic happen.

Challenges to Play on The Sims

My Sims obsessions has kicked in again. I swear, every time summer comes around, I find another excuse to stay indoors. Today I wanted to share with you what keeps me entertained when I play The Sims (2, 3, or 4): Challenges! This post idea started when I told people at work that I spent my evenings playing hours of The Sims solid, and they returned with "how many did you kill?" I don't do things like that. This is what I do:

Our Adventures Scrapbook

The other week I had a creative brainwave on a quiet day at work to start scrapbooking my adventures. It probably stemmed from all the posts I am yet to write about things I've been getting up to since June, and for some reason I thought I'd give myself MORE work to do but the idea of making an adventure scrapbook still gets me excited. This is something I definitely should have started years ago, Matthew and I have been to so many places and I just finally decided I want a more permanent momento of where we go. Then, while I was making it I realised it was too bloody cute so had to share a tutorial of how I did it. It's super easy and not really a tutorial, I'm just literally shaking with excitement to show you guys.

I Made an Adult Decision

In my May Ruminations post, I eluded to a big announcement that I was going spill over the next couple of weeks and I haven't actually got around to announcing the thing I was thinking about then. But things have also changed now and for some reason I want to share it, one night when I couldn't sleep I was like that would make for a great blog post. So I followed through on sleep-deprived, just-worked-an-almost-12-hour-shift Fiona and here it is:

I don't think I wrote a single book review in June. I did read a bunch of new books though, so thought I'd share a little bit on them. For once, there seems to be a solid theme: Brand New Young Adult Novels.

My Life Goals

When SazBomb shared her life goals I got inspired to do my own. This is the best kind of post to neb on, I don't know, call me a massive Sims player but people's dreams and aspirations are so interesting to me. So I'm going to lay out some life goals for all to see. Even the more far-fetched ones.

TellTale Games: The Walking Dead

I know when I mention Telltale, you're mind might immediately jump to their Game of Thrones game that seems to pop up all over twitter at the moment. But let's just back up to the 2012 game The Walking Dead (Season 1) which I only recently got around to playing. In short, if you haven't played this yet then get it, immediately. You have no idea what you're missing out on.

5 TV Series to Watch Next

I've had the horrible realisation that tonight/yesterday (depending on where and when you watch it) is the final episode of Game of Thrones Season 5! Already I'm heartbroken because what else can I watch on Monday nights? Or, more realistically, binge watch until I am over the season finale? I'm going to attempt to name a few series that you can look in to watching next that are different to Game of Thrones but just as absorbing.

16 Summer Reading Recommendations

Today I decided to try something a little new with my 16 recommends by supplying some good books to read this summer! It's still going to be the same as always (in that the images and little teasers are from Goodreads so you can add it to your reading list) but I've got a whole mix of titles from different genres for summer reading. Some of these are new, some of these are old (like, just read them already), some I have read, and others I haven't (yet). Hopefully, you'll find something good!

Life, Love & Liberty at Capology*

I was invited to attend the Life Love & Liberty event at Capology with I Sunk Your Battleship (ISYB) on Thursday just gone. I only stayed at the event for around 45 minutes, and being the little anti-social butterfly that I am I didn't really talk to anyone but I did get a good look around to see what I Sunk Your Battleship has to offer in their new clothing line.

5 Fictional Characters that are my Spirit Animal #Fandom5

Welcome to a post where I am going to dissect my personality in order to find the 5 characters that I most identify with. I was very excited about this prompt for Fandom5 and it took me no time at all to find the characters that could literally be my spirit animal.

16 Graphic Novel Recommendations

I've recently started reading graphic novels for so many reasons, but the best reason is of course that they are simply ace. I've put off reading graphic novels for a while because I am way to intimidated by the selection of DC and Marvel comics (like Batman alone, there is too many, where do I start? I know there is an order, a guy at work has told me the order but it's like, overwhelming). Luckily, there are so many more to pick from so I'm looking at smaller series and more independent publishers that you should definitely check out.

Before I get in to the recommends, like normal I'm going to say all of the images and little teasers are from Goodreads so if something intrigues you click on the link to find out more but I obviously would suggest running to your local bookstore/comic book shop to buy these. It's a little different to normal because there are going to be a bunch of different styles and genres, and most of these might not be suitable for younger readers (due to gore and sexual imagery).

Cafe W, Newcastle

I wanted to share something that I feel might be a little gem still, hidden in plain sight in the centre of Newcastle. Cafe W is located inside Waterstones on the first floor and it sells all the things you'd expect in a Cafe: coffees, teas, cakes, sandwiches and very recently they've added milkshakes to the menu!
