Skulduggery Pleasant by Derek Landy

You know what I love? Kids books. No matter what my age I will always go straight for the Young Adult section in book shops, but recently I've been going even younger than that. I heard some awesome things about Skulduggery Pleasant by Derek Landy (a book that belongs in your 9-13 age groups alongside your Harry Potter and Percy Jackson) and I thought I'd share because this is a really awesome series to get in to - no matter what your age.

SPOILERS

Quick Look: World with Magic, Good vs Evil, Mystery, slightly Macabre, Humorous.

"Stephanie's uncle Gordon is a writer of horror fiction. But when he dies and leaves her his estate, Stephanie learns that while he may have written horror, it certainly wasn't fiction. Pursued by evil forces intent on recovering a mysterious key, Stephanie finds help from an unusual source - the wisecracking skeleton of a dead wizard" (Goodreads)

Not only is it a fascinating world that is huge (underground magic, a secret war as well as fresh new ideas about vampires and monsters) but the characters are brilliant. Landy brings a lot of humour out - especially from one Skulduggery Pleasant. Skulduggery is one of the best heroes I've read about because he has all those great qualities (follows his gut, protective, dramatic story) but also has a great sense of humour about it. The banter between Stephanie, his 12 year old partner, and Skulduggery brings a smile to my face and I can't name a lot of books that are funny enough to do that.

Let's not forget that Skulduggery is also a detective as well as sorcerer and there are a surprising amount of twists I didn't see coming until the last minute. Landy knows how to keep his readers on their toes. To find out more read the books, you won't regret it, I love how original his ideas are. There are nine in the series (so far) and I'm excitedly reading through them all (when I have time to get through my ginormous To-Read-List). Definitely a great (and easy) read.

For a gift: I definitely would recommend this to someone looking to buy a book for a person who likes magical worlds (like Harry Potter), mystery and adventure. It's suitable for your 9/10 year olds+ so you don't have to fear inappropriate language or behavior. It can be quite dark (in the sense of murderous villains and trying to wipe out humanity) but all around a great read.
