Not too long ago I went on a mate date with one of my closest friends to Geek Retreat where we had a lovely catch up. Geek Retreat opened early in September at 38 Grainger Street (just opposite Travelling Man, it's bright purple and yellow logo is hard to miss!) and I was so excited about it I knew I would be visiting sooner rather than later.
Nerds of the world unite, inside here is fantastic. It's got such a good vibe and atmosphere I could see how someone could spend all day here. The arrangement is seating areas in the middle of the room, varying from giant tables and chairs to groups of sofas and a till on one side where you order your food and/or drink at most likely doubles as a till to purchase the variety of goods they have for sale; we're talking action figures on the walls, posters and I bet there are comics in there too, I didn't have a chance to get a thorough look around but I did get some scran. I had a waffle and a milkshake. The waffle above was okay, I was so hungry I was just so happy to have food but on a scale of 0-10 it would only score maybe a 6.5. It wasn't anything special but I didn't have any ice cream with it - ice cream would have finished it off nicely.
The milkshake however was a godsend: ice cream based oreo and nutella! It was magical and so tasty. I can't remember if this was just a deal of the time or if this is on the menu forever but if you see it, go for it! As Geek Retreat is a new store, and we did visit at the beginning of September not too long after it opened, I'm going to let it slide that my friend got the wrong milkshake (and there was confusion as to whether they were going to take it away or deal with it - they didn't so my friend just drank it and we left) and the order took an age to get through even though the staff didn't necessarily appear to be overwhelmed with orders - it was busy but it was a lot of people hanging out and playing games rather than ordering constantly, but I could be wrong. The service can be improved but it'll take time for the new staff to get to grips with the system and falling into the rhythm.
Even so, I can't wait to visit again because once new staff are confident and everything works like a well oiled machine this place is going to be spectacular. They even host events: Big Geeky quizzes, Pokébrunch, Anything Can Happen Tuesdays and loads more so I literally can't wait. This place is going to be popular.
