To mark the very special occasion of my boyfriend getting his last medical exam out of the way today and thus being finished for the summer (finally!) we went on a little foodie expedition to Cal's Own.
Cal's Own opened in 2012 and I remember that because I had moved to a house with my friends just two streets away from the place. For ages, I said "I am definitely going to try Cal's Own" because I love me some pizza and Chillingham Road is one of those places where I was scared it would go out of business before I could try it (I know, how selfish of me!) It's 2014 and even though I've moved Cal's Own is still standing strong and I finally got to try a slice. How wrong was I? I'd eat my words if is not been so full from the delightful food.
Can we talk about how big these pizzas are? We shared an 18" between us which left us feeling stuffed, in hindsight we should have probably shared the 13" but when in Rome...
Cal's Own serves Brooklyn style pizza pies: "All of Cal’s Own whole pies are made to the highest Neapolitan standard, hand stretched and built on the large wooden peels commonly found in New York city. Select your preferred pizza, and have it topped with your choice of extras from our menu, if you so desire. Your pie is then placed directly onto firebricks and baked at an extremely high temperature, giving each pizza its own unique shape and distinctive taste." (Cal's Own Facebook page)
I loved everything about our custom pizza pie, it was flavoursome and light. Each table has some of the special hot sauce which is spicy and vinegar-y, my two soul-mate ingredients when looking for a hot sauce. Yes, I would recommend it.
Our accompanying beverages were grape soda and pink lemonade which we ended up swapping because the lemonade was too lemony for me and I'd never had grape soda before. A new favourite of mine.
All of this for the exceptional price of £22.50 (not including tip) - exceptional! We already discussed going back (but maybe getting the smaller pizza)
